Every year on the Saturday before Thanksgiving, a coalition of child welfare organizations sponsor National Adoption Day. This is a collective national effort to raise awareness of the children in foster care who are waiting for families, who are waiting for forever homes. Since 1987, the number of children in foster care nationally has doubled and the average time a child remains in foster care has lengthened to nearly five years. Each year, more than 26,000 children in foster care will age out of the system without ever being placed with a permanent family!
Locally, in our metro area, there are currently over 68 children in foster care who are available for adoption – 25 of those are waiting for a forever family. Come see if adoption is for you – Tuesday, November 26, 2013 6pm at the DCFS Westbank Office, 2150 Westbank Expressway, 6th Floor, Harvey, LA 70058 or Thursday, December 12, 2013 5:30pm at the Mahalia Jackson Early Childhood Center, 2405 Jackson Ave, New Orleans 70113.
