DYFS Partners with the Community to Provide a “Summer of Fun”
Under the direction of Judge Michael D. Clement, through a partnership with numerous community entities, the Department of Youth and Family Services (DYFS) has provided a summer of fun for many youth of Plaquemines Parish. From May 27th through July 3rd, DYFS sponsored “Summer Hoops” and “Thursday Outings” for kids in the isolated areas of our parish.
Through a partnership with Plaquemines Parish School System, youth in the Port Sulphur and Phoenix areas met at the sprung gyms on Tuesday and Wednesday nights from 6:00 – 9:00 PM to play some friendly basketball. “Summer Hoops” serviced over 75 kids by providing healthy, appropriate recreational fun for six weeks. The games were managed and officiated by DYFS staff and the kids thoroughly enjoyed their time together.
“Thursday Outings” to numerous facilities such as the Audubon Zoo, Aquarium, and Insectarium; AMC Theaters; Piccadilly Cafeteria and Zephyr Field were made possible through generous donations from community partners in the surrounding metro area. Kids were treated to fun-filled adventures and experiences that would have otherwise been unavailable to them without such partnerships.
“Summer Hoops” and “Thursday Outings” would not have been possible without the VERY generous donation of a 15-passenger van from the Greater New Orleans Foundation. Transportation of youth to and from the isolated areas of Plaquemines Parish has been an issue in the past; however, DYFS is now able to provide recreational opportunities for groups of kids that would not be possible without such a vehicle. In no time, kids recognized the DYFS van in their communities and happily hopped aboard for summer fun.
This summer, more than ever, the benefit of community partnerships has been evident in Plaquemines Parish. Judge Clement and DYFS would like to thank all of the community partners who have made “Summer Hoops”, “Thursday Outings” and transportation to these and future events possible. It is through the continuation of community collaboration that we, together, can continue to protect and serve the youth of Plaquemines Parish.
