DYFS Partners with JPPAS and N.O. Jazz and Heritage Foundation

Under the direction of Judge Michael D. Clement, the Department of Youth and Family Services partnered with the Jefferson Parish Performing Arts Society (JPPAS) through a grant with the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and Foundation to provide poetry instruction to the students on the East bank of Plaquemines Parish.  Local artist, Shelton “Shakespeare” Alexander, worked with the students at Phoenix High School to develop an understanding and appreciation of poetry.  The students read and interpreted poetry and wrote their own poems.  They had the opportunity to recite poems before a group of peers and teachers.  The lessons reinforced the importance of reading, writing, public speaking and creativity.  This community partnership supports Judge Clement’s mission to create opportunities for the youth of Plaquemines Parish to explore their talents and spend their time engaged in positive activities.
